5 out of 5 stars TurboTax customers can now e-file up to five federal tax returns, the limit set by the IRS, and prepare/print unlimited returns   November 29, 2008
Tex2007 (Texas)

12-23-08 Turbotax 2008 and Intuit received so many complaints and many were switching to TaxCut 2008 that they changed their policy of only one return per CD on December 16, 2008. All you have to do is update and you are fixed for unlimited returns and 5 free e-files.

It reminds of the time in 2003 that Intuit copy protected the software so well that no one could get it to load and many had to go buy TaxCut. I prefer TurboTax and have used both. Here is the recent update information that I do not see here on Amazon reviews.

Update:

Updated: 12/16/2008

You might be confused - or alarmed - when you come to the screen shown below.

This screen, which reflected the original pricing structure, was removed in an update released on December 16, 2008. TurboTax customers can now e-file up to five federal tax returns, the limit set by the IRS, and prepare and print unlimited returns at no additional cost.

To remove this screen, please download the latest update.

5 out of 5 stars TurboTax has apologized to me. You should read this, please.   January 6, 2009

You may not need this expensive version of TurboTax if you're buying it primarily because you also have investment income (Schedule D). I realize TT has recommended this but they've recanted and told me that the 2008 Deluxe version will be every bit as capable as the 2007 Deluxe version was in guiding us through the Schedule D, C, SE and other self employment forms.

Here's the dialogue:

TurboTax support has been extremely responsive in calling me back regarding my complaint to them about how badly they're confusing people on which TT product to buy.

I'd like you to read my question to them and then their answer. The bottom line is that TTDeluxe 2008 is every bit as comprehensive (and more) as the TTDeluxe 2007 product. There are no takeaways and no real reason for a Schedule D user to have to buy the Premiere version and no significant reason why a self-employed person MUST buy the Home/Business version. He knew their company screwed up and caused a public relations nightmare. Apparently the "recommended" upgrade products have expanded guidance and help for the uninitiated TT user.

If this 2nd review of mine is not accepted by Amazon, I will try to post it to the Premiere version and the Home/Business version and also as a comment to my 1st review here.

My question:

Considerable confusion exists as to whether a person with investment income/transactions or self employed income absolutely needs to buy the considerably more expensive Premiere or Home/Business version. Your website indicates that the Deluxe version "includes" forms Sched. D, Sched. C, SE etc. and yet you say we should buy the more expensive program. This doesn't make sense. I'll be happy if Deluxe 2008 is as comprehensive as Deluxe 2007 was but nowhere do you compare the 2008 and 2007 versions.

You are getting very bad reviews this year on Amazon because of all this confusion. People believe you are taking away function from Deluxe and raising the price to boot.

Their response:

"These are the actions we took to assist you in resolving your issue:

I was able to express to Sam that the Deluxe program will have the same functionality as in previous years, as well as additional features as well. Sam express his confusion on the product features and that of the comparison between each of the verison of TTax. I informed Sam that he has given me a great piece of reference when relaying the changes, functions, and ease of usage within the program.
I will be able to inform my supervisors on this as well as urge the response for our return customers, as well as new.
Thank You Sam."

5 out of 5 stars Ignore Old Pricing News!   December 24, 2008

Hey, the pricing complaints are old news! This company listens and fixes their mistakes! I am a long-time, unpaid, Beta tester for Turbo Tax. This year those of us, like me, who like to work directly with the forms have a terrific new interface! For those who prefer the interview approach, the process is even clearer this year, and even easier to jump around in the interview so that you do not have to do your taxes in one sitting. I hate organizing papers, and do my taxes over an extended period.
The neat thing about TT is that they try to make the software better every year in large part by listening to us, the testers, listening to their Inner Circle members' feedback and in general, listening to their customer base. This year's version is readily their best, and they've made it easier to use the Live Community feature from within the software to get answers to tax questions for free. Like any company, TT sometimes gets a notion that seems like a good idea but turns out not to be. This year's pricing initially was just such a bad idea - and TT showed how responsive they can be and have changed that pricing model! Like past years, you can prepare multiple returns for no additional charge, and file them by mail if you like (I do). For those of you who don't get the eFile thing, the IRS is pushing heavily to get everyone to do this. And they pressure the software companies to "encourage" eFiling. Even though it saves the IRS a bunch to get returns electronically, they expect us to pay for this service. I send mine in by mail - I am a traditionalist, but I am also cheap. Hooray for TT to recognize a mistake and fix it fast; they have done so in the past, and as long as they continue to be so responsive, I look forward to continuing as a Beta tester and a tax preparer!

5 out of 5 stars Turbo Tax is on target again!!   December 24, 2008

I did not yet purchase the product but am planning to and investingating the opportunities being marketed. After reading all the bad revies on Amazon, I decided to do a chat with Intuit regarding all the comments. They confirmed with me today that their product allows for the "preparation and e-filing of up to 5 Federal returns without any additional charges". There will be a $19.95 e-file charge for the state return. There is one free state program included with the purchase also.
According to the rep, anyone purchasing the program now will be receiving an "updated program" thus requiring no download of an update as mentioned by a prior consumer. Those with an earlier version will need to do the update.
So as I shop for my best deal, I wanted to share my findings with all who can benefit and say thanks to those who previously alerted all of us to thier previous poor decision to charge.
Turbo Tax is now safe to consider as an option!!

5 out of 5 stars TurboTax better for my needs, esp. after price structure reconsidered   December 29, 2008
J. Hogle (Scandia, MN United States)

I've been doing my taxes electronically since the 80s, and have used a lot of tax software over the years. In the 90s I tried both TaxCut and TurboTax (I think it was MacInTax then) and, not seeing a lot of difference between the two, settled on TaxCut due to the difference in price for the software. I was a regular user of Taxcut for years because it is (or at least used to be) simplest to stay with one program from year to year to make importing the last year's data easier.

In 2003 or 2004, I discovered significant deductions that I'd missed using TaxCut and found it very time-consuming and difficult to prepare amended forms from previous years. I wasted hours of my time on poor documentation and software badly designed for that particular use of the program. I was very disappointed and changed over to TurboTax. Good thing, because shortly after that (2005?) TaxCut discontinued its Mac version (it recently was re-introduced for the Mac).

I now beta test TurboTax. Intuit's beta testers are unpaid, although I do get a free copy of the software. For the past 4 years I've been comparing TurboTax to TaxCut by reviewing a friend's copy using my info in both programs. I have to say that although the programs give similar results, I prefer TurboTax. The interface is better for me (personal preference) but more importantly, I get better results from TurboTax, running the same numbers in both programs. I also am not likely to go back to a company that dropped support for my operating system in the very recent past. I don't dislike TaxCut per se, but I have found it is simply not as good for my needs as TurboTax has proven to be.

I was not aware of the TurboTax pricing situation until reading reviews on Amazon, but I'm pleased that Intuit reconsidered the price structure. A lot of us who rely on doing our own taxes are not in a position to absorb extra fees or we'd just pay to have someone do our taxes in the first place.
